Could Neurofeedback be the Answer to Anxiety?
Is Neurofeedback the Answer to Anxiety?
Anxiety presents itself as a response to overwhelming stress in a person’s life. The stress can come from psychological, physical or health problems. When a person is suffering from extreme stress even environmental sources, like loud, abrupt noises, can bring on anxiety and possibly a panic attack. If the stress is not dealt way in a positive manner, then a person’s brain gets locked into a pattern of anxiety. This pattern can be difficult to break on its own.
Neurofeedback offers physiological assistance to help people learn to change their reaction to stress. The brain training acquired in neurofeedback helps people develop the skills they need to significantly reduce or eliminate anxiety in their daily lives. Brain training been used for many years with solid, proven results in individuals suffering from anxiety.
Recognizing Anxiety
People suffering from anxiety engage in excessive worrying, a constant sense of fear, restlessness, are overly reactive, think negatively and defensive. They can’t stop thinking. As a result, anxiety sufferers often feel overwhelmed, tired and stressed out. Anxiety is usually present in cases of an individual who has an addiction, is overly controlling and has underlying behavioral issues.
Some people dealing with anxiety appear outwardly nervous but many sufferers are calm on the outside, but their brain never stops worrying. If the anxiety is not dealt with, it can lead to sleep problems and can negatively affect the quality of their life. People who suffer from anxiety don’t live in the present, instead they constantly are worried about the future or the past.
Neurofeedback: A Safer Alternative to Medication
Anxiety patients are regularly prescribed medications, but prescription drugs can’t teach you how to quiet your mind. Medications can affect the entire brain, even parts of the brain that does not need help. Prescription medications can also cause also cause other issues:
Medications only work when you are taking them and some are highly addictive.
Medication without having other behavior management tools will not prevent anxiety from returning.
When medications may stop working or side effects appear, doctors may switch to a different one. This can lead to further agitation, stress and confusion in anxiety suffers. As the brain learns to decrease anxiety through neurofeedback, often less medication is needed.
Teaching people the skill to calm themselves is a far more effective solution than just taking drugs.
How Does Neurofeedback Reduce Anxiety?
Neurofeedback is easy to learn and one of the quickest and most efficient ways for people to learn how to recognize anxiety triggers and how to reduce the negative response to stress.
The neurofeedback practitioner places electrodes on the patient’s head. The electrodes are connected to an EEG computer monitor and patients are able to watch their brainwaves. As anxiety sufferers learn to reduce anxiety and increase calm, they can watch their brainwaves change. With neurofeedback, they learn to recreate a calmer state and moderate their response to stress. The anxiety is reduced and happens less frequently with each training session. With sufficient training, the brain learns to maintain healthier patterns on its own more consistently.
As the brain learns, patients can reduce the number of brain training sessions. While most people can stop training once they reach their goal, a small number of sufferers with persistent anxiety may require occasional sessions to reach personal goals in anxiety reduction.
